Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better than Queen Latifah America, is an actress and rapper. Her work as Queen Latifah in television, film and in music has earned numerous accolades. These include an Golden Globe Award two Screen Actors Guild Awards Two Image Awards A Grammy Award In addition, she has six Grammy Nominations Emmy Award Nomination and an Academy Award. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, NJ. The daughter is Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's parents separated when she was just 10 years old. Latifah was raised in the Baptist church and she attended Catholic schools in Newark New Jersey. Latifah is an Arabic word that means "delicate and kind". The cousin she had bestowed it on her when she was eight. Latifah, 5-foot-10" tall power forward on the high school team, was always tall. At her school's game Latifah sang "Home" from The Wiz. Latifah was a beatboxer in the Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah used to be a part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who were joined by the producer DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King recorded an example of the rapper Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. He emailed the recorded to Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. The song got the attention from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and in 1988 issued her first track Wrath of My Madness.
